What's the difference??

On my news.mozilla.org server, I have both m.s.seamonkey and
n.p.m.seamonkey newsgroups showing. n.p.m.seamonkey also shows on my E-S
UseNet account.

Today, Ant made a cross-posted post to both those groups, which I first
read in the m.s.seamonkey newsgroup on the n.m.o server account and when
I tried to reply to Ant's post, I was told that I can't post to groups
on two separate servers (or some such wording).

BUT BOTH groups were on my n.m.o server account so, if I am reading a
message on that server, why can't I cross-post to both ng's on that server??

If I had first read the cross-posted message on my UseNet
n.p.m.seamonkey ng and tried to reply, I could, sort of, understand the
complaint as there is no m.s.seamonkey ng on E-S (or the group is
Read-Only, maybe). But that's not the case, so why the problem??

What am I doing wrong this time??

You can reply to both newsgroups via the Mozilla server, but not via
E-S. Another solution would be less cross-posting by Ant.
I do not think the Mozilla server is still functioning, perhaps except
for read-only.

Also, most activity -- and thus the greatest likelihood of a response --
is in alt.comp.software.seamonkey, not netscape.public.mozilla.seamonkey.

Note that some newsgroup services prohibit cross-posting. They might
display cross-posted messages, but they require replies to such messages
be to only one newsgroup.

This message is brought to you via the Mozilla server, it may be
something of a zombie but it still works.

I can't recall if I actually posted my OP to this NG on the n.m.o server
or the E-S server, but I read your post on the n.m.o server .... so it's
still alive! The clock is ticking.

But it is active .... and was the NG I was having problems with!

Previously on the n.m.o server, I've been able to cross-post and I
wouldn't expect that ability to change ..... until the server does close!!

The unmoderated newsgroups can still be posted to, via the Mozilla server.

The moderated newsgroups (only) are now read-only. The moderation software
is no longer approving messages and putting them into the newsgroup.

Giganews run the physical news.mozilla.org server. At sometime Giganews may
shut the server down -- but Giganews has not done so in the last 8 months.

| Sometime after that, Giganews will shut down news.mozilla.org, and you
| will no longer be able to access the newsgroup.

mozilla.support.seamonkey used to be moderated - retroactively. I last
posted there one or two minutes ago.

If it is only retro-moderated, then it will not be affected and you
can still post.

The newsgroups affected are the ones where new posts were passed
through the moderation filters _before_ being put into the newsgroup.
Those moderation filters are now a black hole (since April 2021).

Retro-moderation does not work that way. Retro-moderation works by
cancelling offending posts _after_ they have been put into the
newsgroup.

Coincidentally, I have also posted to mozilla.support.seamonkey .

In your account list, what comes first, news.mozilla.org or
news.eternal-september.org?

I think I'm able to reproduce this when crossposting to news.mozilla.org
if news.mozilla.org comes after some other server/account which also has
a group with the same name.

One possible workaround: when crossposting, change (in the message/post
headers in the compose window) the name of the problematic group to
news://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.support.seamonkey
(instead of just "mozilla.support.seamonkey")
Of course!! That should do it!!
