Discussion:
Upgrading

I've been running Seamonkey 2.0.14 for some time now. Last time I tried to
upgrade it, I didn't like the results so I managed to get back to my original
version. Now lately I'm noticing many sites are not working with Seamonkey. Will
an upgrade solve this problem, or is the prolem with Seamonkey itself regardless
of version?

Also, if I upgrade to 2.25, will it find and import all my bookmarks, which are
many? I don't want to lose them.

And if I decide to go back to 2.0.14, can I do so? and how?

Thanks.

No, Seamonkey uses the guts of the current Firefox as its 'engine', so there should
be few compatibility problems.

It should, the profiles are in the same places. If in doubt, export your bookmarks as
HTML first and put them in a safe place, which could be imported into the new browser.

By deleting the current version and installing 2.0.14 fresh.

If you want some input from someone who's actually done what you're trying to do, the
best place to ask Seamonkey questions these days is mozilla.support.seamonkey (which
means subscribing to the news.mozilla.org server).

Thanks I just created a folder Bookmark Save and exported them into that folder.
So, if I upgrade to a new version of Seamonkey, will it look for them in that
folder or the folder they're currently being kep in, wich I don't recall right
now. Last time I spent an hour trying to find them. But as long as I have them
saved as html files, I would just import them to the new version of the browser?

As for the first question and your reply, are you saying that because Seamonkey
uses "the guts" of Firefox, there should be no problem with sites cooperating
with Seamonkey? Because I sure have problems with certain sites and I have to go
over to Firefox to view the sites as I can't do it on Seamonkey. One good
example is Facebook. I suddenly can't read comments on pages of friends with
Seamonkey but if I go to Firefox, I can. And to anticipate a question, why don't
I use Firefox to begin with? I really don't like it. I've been used to Seamonkey
since it first came out and I don't want to change.

Websites can choose to behave differently because of something called the "user agent
string". A website sees "Firefox" in the string and behaves one way; or it doesn't,
and behaves in a different way. This is an old issue. Recent Seamonkeys DO include
Firefox in their user agent strings.

Changes in Seamonkey UAS's over time:

You can look at your own user agent string by clicking Help->About. Should be near
the bottom.

Thanks again. I checked Help>About and there's no info as to user agent strings
in my v 2.0.14

I'd really like to upgrade. It looks like I'm WAYYYY behind, but I'm just afraid
of what I'll get. For one thing, I do not like tabbed browers/browsing. That's
why I dumped the last upgrade I did. And I also lost my bookmarks and it took a
long time to reconstruct everything back to the way I wanted it.

Also, when I go to the download of the latest version, it says it's 2.25
However, when I clicked on the link you gave me for the user agent string, it
doesn't version 2.25 in the list of different versions, and in fact goes past
the number 2.25. What's the deal there? What's the latest version. Any idea?

Thanks again.

You don't need to use tabs. You can right click on links and tell the browser to open
a new window, or open them yourself with CTRL+N. There might be a setting for
disabling them, but I don't know what it is.

You can set Seamonkey to copy your bookmarks to an html file every time you shut it
down. Go to about:config (promising it you'll be careful!) and type

browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML

Edit that setting to TRUE. And that's it. The bookmarks html will always be in the
profiles directory (earlier msg).

If you're running Windows take a look at

http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

It's free and works with Seamonkey.

Yeah, some of the versions on that page weren't familiar to me, and they haven't
bothered keeping it current, either. Current version is 2.25, and the UAS of the
version I'm typing this in is

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:28.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/28.0 SeaMonkey/2.25

There are occasionally reasons to be annoyed with Seamonkey, but hardly ever any to
be afraid of it. :)

Just when I think I have things set up the way I want, I can't find how to put
"Go" in the extreme right of the location(URL) bar. Seems now after entering a
URL, the only way to go to a site is to hit enter. No big deal I guess, but if
I cut/copied and pasted a URL to the locator bar, it was easier to just hit Go.
I had it in the older 2.0.14 version. And I was able to add it in the version
under one of the Preferences tabs. Now I can't find it anywhere I look on v.
2.25. Why would they have gottn rid of that?

Just when I think I have things set up the way I want, I can't find how to put
"Go" in the extreme right of the location(URL) bar. Seems now after entering a
URL, the only way to go to a site is to hit enter. No big deal I guess, but if
I cut/copied and pasted a URL to the locator bar, it was easier to just hit Go.
I had it in the older 2.0.14 version. And I was able to add it in the version
under one of the Preferences tabs. Now I can't find it anywhere I look on v.
2.25. Why would they have gottn rid of that?
Howdy. Right click in the general area where the Go button used to be (but not in the
URL field). At the bottom of the list that shows up you should see "Customize". Click
on Customize. Now, a "Customize Toolbar" window appears and with any luck you should
find a Go button in it. Drag the Go button back to where it used to be and click
"Done" at the bottom of the Customize Toolbar window. With the least bit of luck,
that should be that.

And if I decide to go back to 2.0.14, can I do so? and how?
Thanks.

You are Da Man! Thanks. Found it and fixed it.

Now todays problem.

After a few days of being thrilled with version 2.25, today I went to view some
comics strips which I have bookmarked and I read every day, like Pearls Before
Swine, Ten Cats, Brevity, Calvin and Hobbs to name a few.

When I go to the page, everything on the page comes up fine except for the comic
strip itself. It was fine yesterday, today noghting. I don't know if I
inadvertently hit something to change things. Tere are two profiles on
Seamonkey, one is mine the other is my wifes. I copied and pasted the URL for
one of the omcis that isn't showing up and went to her profile, pasted into the
locator bar and the comic comes up fine.

Any idea what I could have done??

Sounds like it could be something involving browser Add-Ons or Extensions, especially
one in your profile that might be set to update automatically (ie, without telling
you) which isn't included in the profile that still works.

You should be able to nail it down by clicking on "Never Activate", for Add-Ons, or
the "Disable" button for extensions, one by one, and clicking on Reload each time to
see when the comic shows up again.

Thanks. I just checked. There are no add-ons listed, and four extensions. I
disabled all the extensions and it had no effect. Still can't see the comics.
The strange thing is the first comic I went to see worked fine. I went to the
second one and nothing. This is totally got me flustered. Especially since they
work in the other profile.

On some browsers, there is a "automatically" load images that can be
disabled. Also, you may accidentally press some "don't download
images" button.

You should give a typical URL to see if it works from some other PC.

Good idea. Thanks. Here's one of the URL's:

http://www.gocomics.com/pearlsbeforeswine?ref=comics#.U03BuEKAqSq

I get the page, but the comic should be there near the top.

I have 2.25 too.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:28.0) Gecko/20100101
Firefox/28.0 SeaMonkey/2.25

I get the image. It is on another server however. Perhaps you
don't allow images from other servers ?

Also, there are many many scripts on the page. Try ctrl-I and
you will see what your browser see.

I think Denis may have it. Try going to

And ticking "Load all images".

Thanks to both. All images is checked. That was one of the first things I looked
at. Also, I've been looking at this comic and the others each and every day for
years, with the only problem being sometimes the page is slow in loading. And
this afternoon when the problem cropped up, I had just looked at another comic
which showed just fine then when I clicked on the next one I wanted to see,
nothing. This is driving me nuts.

If you don't discover the setting responsible, you can try creating a new profile. If
pictures won't load in that you'll know to look elsewhere for the problem.

Problem solved. Thanks for the new profile idea. I created a new profile, set it
up the way I wanted it, imported my bookmarks and all is well. One question
though. When I imported my book marks, why didn't the Personal Toolbar Folder
send all the links/bookmarks in the folder to the toolbar? I had to manually
open each link and drag it into the tool bar. Just wondering for next time.

Also, one last minor item, can I rearrange the order the profile names show up
in the profile box or are they just alphabetical? Strange that the profile I
just replaced had my name, which begins with R first and my wifes name which
begins with D second.

Thanks again for all the help. Hopefully I'm done with the issues.

Go to Bookmarks-> Manage Bookmarks

Bookmarks Toolbar should be one of the headings you'll see. It's a permanent feature
in SM bookmarks. Just shift what you want on your toolbar to beneath that heading
manually with the mouse.

Can't answer that, I'm afraid. I only have one profile at the moment.

You could try moving them with the mouse. :)
