Post by r***@optonline.netPost by c***@invalid.netPost by r***@optonline.netPost by c***@invalid.netPost by r***@optonline.netI've been running Seamonkey 2.0.14 for some time now. Last time I tried to
upgrade it, I didn't like the results so I managed to get back to my original
version. Now lately I'm noticing many sites are not working with Seamonkey. Will
an upgrade solve this problem, or is the prolem with Seamonkey itself regardless
of version?
No, Seamonkey uses the guts of the current Firefox as its 'engine', so there should
be few compatibility problems.
Post by r***@optonline.netAlso, if I upgrade to 2.25, will it find and import all my bookmarks, which are
many? I don't want to lose them.
It should, the profiles are in the same places. If in doubt, export your bookmarks as
HTML first and put them in a safe place, which could be imported into the new browser.
Post by r***@optonline.netAnd if I decide to go back to 2.0.14, can I do so? and how?
By deleting the current version and installing 2.0.14 fresh.
If you want some input from someone who's actually done what you're trying to do, the
best place to ask Seamonkey questions these days is mozilla.support.seamonkey (which
means subscribing to the news.mozilla.org server).
Thanks I just created a folder Bookmark Save and exported them into that folder.
So, if I upgrade to a new version of Seamonkey, will it look for them in that
folder or the folder they're currently being kep in, wich I don't recall right
It would. The backup's just for insurance.
Post by r***@optonline.netnow. Last time I spent an hour trying to find them. But as long as I have them
saved as html files, I would just import them to the new version of the browser?

Post by r***@optonline.netAs for the first question and your reply, are you saying that because Seamonkey
uses "the guts" of Firefox, there should be no problem with sites cooperating
with Seamonkey? Because I sure have problems with certain sites and I have to go
over to Firefox to view the sites as I can't do it on Seamonkey. One good
example is Facebook. I suddenly can't read comments on pages of friends with
Seamonkey but if I go to Firefox, I can. And to anticipate a question, why don't
I use Firefox to begin with? I really don't like it. I've been used to Seamonkey
since it first came out and I don't want to change.
Websites can choose to behave differently because of something called the "user agent
string". A website sees "Firefox" in the string and behaves one way; or it doesn't,
and behaves in a different way. This is an old issue. Recent Seamonkeys DO include
Firefox in their user agent strings.

You can look at your own user agent string by clicking Help->About. Should be near
the bottom.
Thanks again. I checked Help>About and there's no info as to user agent strings
in my v 2.0.14
I'm betting it's somewhere to be found, but it doesn't matter.
Post by r***@optonline.netI'd really like to upgrade. It looks like I'm WAYYYY behind, but I'm just afraid
of what I'll get. For one thing, I do not like tabbed browers/browsing. That's
why I dumped the last upgrade I did. And I also lost my bookmarks and it took a
long time to reconstruct everything back to the way I wanted it.
You don't need to use tabs. You can right click on links and tell the browser to open
a new window, or open them yourself with CTRL+N. There might be a setting for
disabling them, but I don't know what it is.
You can set Seamonkey to copy your bookmarks to an html file every time you shut it
down. Go to about:config (promising it you'll be careful!) and type
browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML
Edit that setting to TRUE. And that's it. The bookmarks html will always be in the
profiles directory (earlier msg).
If you're running Windows take a look at
http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/
It's free and works with Seamonkey.
Post by r***@optonline.netAlso, when I go to the download of the latest version, it says it's 2.25
However, when I clicked on the link you gave me for the user agent string, it
doesn't version 2.25 in the list of different versions, and in fact goes past
the number 2.25. What's the deal there? What's the latest version. Any idea?
Yeah, some of the versions on that page weren't familiar to me, and they haven't
bothered keeping it current, either. Current version is 2.25, and the UAS of the
version I'm typing this in is
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:28.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/28.0 SeaMonkey/2.25
There are occasionally reasons to be annoyed with Seamonkey, but hardly ever any to
be afraid of it. :)
