I found a post that seemed to say version 5.3b1 of the Lightning beta is
compatible with SeaMonkey 2.46. I tried to install it but SeaMonkey
refuses because "it is not compatible with SeaMonkey 2.46".

Anyone know how I can get Lightning to work with the current SeaMonkey?

You may want to ask over on mozilla.support.seamonkey .
There has been recent discussion of addins/addons/etc and compatibility
issues.
{I've not used any additions of any sort since Netscape days ;}

I wasn't able to find mozilla.support.seamonkey to subscribe to it.
Does it use a special server that is separate from usenet?

Yes, I just found that when I completed my mailing list registration. I
didn't think it really was a newsgroup as I couldn't find a server and
it the links to it were only via Google groups. But your link seems to
have connected me to a server in Seamonkey.

Thanks
